By gaining access to a router, an attacker can control all internet traffic on the network, putting all connected devices, including smartphones and computers, at risk, the department noted.
By changing the settings, a criminal can redirect the user to fake websites and obtain logins, passwords, and payment information, as well as use the router as a tool for attacks, with activity originating from the user's IP address.
Furthermore, the department noted that access to hacked devices is sold, and illegal activities can also be carried out through them, with the user again being held responsible.
Earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that approximately 25 million Android devices may have been infected with malware. Infected smartphones opened specific websites in hidden windows without the owners' knowledge, and through these "views," the attackers inflated ad traffic and generated revenue. The Ministry of Internal Affairs noted that the malicious code most often disguised itself as harmless apps, including flashlights and memory cleaners. The agency recommended installing apps only from trusted sources and carefully considering the permissions requested during installation.
