[Regnum] A suspect in a double murder committed in 1993 has been detained in Perm Krai. Izvestia reported this on April 19, citing a source.
The detainee turned out to be 56-year-old Elmar D, an Azerbaijani national who received Russian citizenship several years ago.
The suspect was detained in southern Russia as part of efforts to solve crimes from previous years.
Investigators believe that in 1993, three men traveled from the Transcaucasus to the Perm region to purchase building materials. They had prepared 20 million rubles for this purpose (before the denomination, this sum was approximately equivalent to the cost of a VAZ 21093. – Ed.).
Elmar D. allegedly intended to embezzle the money and kill his business partners. He enlisted the help of his relatives to carry out the crime. Both men died from stab wounds. Details of the crime have not been released, the publication wrote.
The crime wasn't immediately solved, but the suspect's identity was established and he was placed on the wanted list. Law enforcement learned he was in Azerbaijan, but he evaded arrest there. According to preliminary information, he invested the stolen money in a business, later moved to Russia without attracting law enforcement attention (likely using false documents), and settled in the south of the country. An Izvestia source reported that the suspect's son is also successfully engaged in business in Russia.
Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs spokesperson Irina Volk previously reported the arrest of a suspect in another long-ago murder. In 1999, in the Astrakhan region, a riot police officer and his acquaintance intervened on behalf of a man who was being threatened by a group of young men. During the ensuing scuffle, the officer was beaten to death. The perpetrators were never apprehended. Recently, one of them was detained in Moscow and taken into custody. The search for the other perpetrators continues.
