[Regnum] Archaeologists have discovered a previously unknown section of the late antique period in a Roman necropolis along the historic Via Ostia road, which experts have dubbed a "vampire cemetery." This was reported by the Arkeonews portal.
Archaeologists found metal nails driven between the ribs and into the eye sockets of the buried bodies. It was determined that the nails were driven into the bodies after death. Some graves contained lead tablets with curses. Scientists have suggested that beliefs about vampires were widespread in Rome.
Similar burials have previously been found in Poland, Bulgaria and Croatia.
National Geographic magazine previously compiled a ranking of the most unique artifacts. A gold rush-era ghost ship topped the list, with explorers finding forgotten boots on the deck of the sunken vessel and scattered kitchen utensils in the kitchen. Also on the list were the largest Anglo-Saxon hoard (gold jewelry, precious stones, and ornate weapons); ancient teeth with gemstones; the tomb of the ancient "King of Jewels" in Peru; and a vampire skull found in Italy.
