Ahwaz or Ahvaz, sometimes called Arabistan, comprises Khuzestan, Elam, Bushehr, and Hormozgan provinces in southwest Iran on the border of Iraq at the northern end of the Persian Gulf. Populated by Sunni Arabs and home to Iran’s largest oil field, it was an independent sheikdom until Iran occupied and annexed it in 1925 with British approval, and its liberation movements have turned up in our archive from time to time.
