Al Shabaab is losing one of the Strength signs of its survival, RECRUITMENT.
Somewhere else is more appealing to the jihad tourists? Good to know. Where are they going instead?
In recent months the group has faced a sharp decline in the number of militants willing to fight under its banner. It has failed to attract the kind of recruits it once relied on to sustain its insurgency.

Information obtained from recent defectors, especially from its combat units, shows that the flow of new members has dropped dramatically. At the same time, large numbers are being killed on the battlefield, while others are defecting or surrendering. This collapse is driven by several factors.

Clan leaders once tasked by the group to mobilize fighters from their communities are now refusing to cooperate and are openly resisting its demands.

Earlier security reports also indicated that the flow of foreign fighters arriving from East African countries has effectively stopped as a result of strengthened intelligence cooperation and tighter border security. However, recruitment from Oromo communities saw a noticeable rise during recent years.
