[Regnum] The American aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford experienced problems with its sewage system while deployed off the coast of Iran, The Wall Street Journal reported.
According to the publication, the ship is equipped with approximately 650 vacuum toilets, and at least one malfunctions daily while the carrier group is in the region. A US Navy spokesperson told the newspaper that the situation is gradually improving and does not affect combat missions.
The ship's captain, David Scarossi, said that difficulties with the sanitary system have become one of the causes of discontent among the sailors. He added that some of the crew are struggling with the extended deployment in the Persian Gulf, causing them to miss family events and uncertain when they will return home.
The USS Gerald R. Ford is the lead ship of the newest class of American aircraft carriers and is considered the most expensive in the history of the US Navy. The ship has repeatedly deployed to the Middle East as part of the US military's bolstered presence in the region.
