| 8 Dead in Tahoe area avalanche - 1 still missing |

| [NBCLOSANGELES] Eight backcountry skiers have been found dead and one remains missing after an avalanche near Lake Tahoe, officials said at a Wednesday news conference. The search in the Castle Peak area of Northern California's Sierra Nevada range began Tuesday afternoon when authorities received a 911 call indicating 15 skiers were buried by the slide. Six of them have been found alive. The Nevada County Sheriff's Department said the survivors include two women and four men, one of whom is a guide. The slide is the deadliest avalanche in the U.S. since 1981, when 11 climbers were killed on Mount Rainier, Washington. |
