[Regnum] A G1.3 magnetic storm has begun on Earth. The Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported this on its Telegram channel on February 15.
According to the report, the Earth experienced its second magnetic storm of February overnight, peaking at 5:00 AM Moscow time at G1.3 on a five-point scale. Therefore, the storm is currently in the weak to moderate range.
According to scientists, the event was caused by a large coronal hole on the Sun, located opposite the Earth. The total duration of the disturbances, which began overnight, could last up to two days, but with a highly uneven impact. However, the storm's progression to G2 is unlikely, the experts clarified.
The laboratory also reported that, against the backdrop of a magnetic storm, a noticeable increase in the brightness of the auroras was observed at night.
Earlier, scientists from the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that active region (spot group) 4366 on the Sun, observed from Earth, had set a new 21st-century record for the number of strong solar flares. By February 8, this region had recorded 66 flares of class M or higher.
