[Regnum] The active Piton de la Fournaise volcano on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean has erupted for the second time this year. France 24 reported this, citing data from the volcano's Volcanological Observatory (OVPF).
The observatory added that the eruption began very quickly. Lava erupted on the southern slope at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time (9:00 a.m. Moscow time), just 35 minutes after the onset of a major seismic event, indicating magma rising to the surface.
The seismic phenomenon does not pose a danger to local residents, as the volcano is located in an uninhabited area.
Located in southeastern Réunion, Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It has erupted approximately 20 times over the past 10 years. The last eruption was recorded less than a month ago. The volcano awoke on January 18 after a two-year hiatus, lasting approximately 48 hours.
It is noted that, unlike explosive processes accompanied by ash emissions, lava at Piton de la Fournaise flows calmly down the slopes. Spectacular lava cascades traditionally attract many tourists and locals.
