[Regnum] US President Donald Trump proposed developing a new, improved, and modernized treaty on the reduction of offensive arms instead of extending the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). The politician announced this on his social media account, Truth Social, on February 5.
Trump called the New START a document that was “poorly negotiated” by the United States and is constantly violated.
"We must direct our nuclear experts to develop a new, improved, and modern treaty that will last for years to come," Trump wrote.
The New START Treaty expires on February 5.
Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported that Russia and the United States have agreed to comply with the terms of the expired Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START) for another six months after its expiration.
Meanwhile, the Axios portal reported, citing sources, that delegations from Russia and the United States discussed extending the Nuclear Arms Limitation Treaty on February 5 during a meeting in Abu Dhabi, where negotiations on resolving the conflict in Ukraine were taking place.
