[Regnum] The implementation of the United States' "Golden Dome" project could complicate international disarmament dialogue. Gennady Gatilov, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva, stated this in an interview with Izvestia on February 5.
"One of the consequences of the Golden Dome project's implementation could be a nuclear and conventional arms race, a further increase in conflict potential, an increased risk of miscalculations and misunderstandings, a deepening of contradictions, and the hampering of international dialogue on any aspect of disarmament issues," the diplomat explained.
Gatilov noted that the Golden Dome project includes the deployment of interceptors in space and stipulates that US missile defense actions are primarily aimed against strategic missiles of adversaries with equal or comparable armament. Thus, the US is seriously jeopardizing the long-term sustainability of peaceful space activities.
Washington's actions, according to the diplomat, contradict the principles laid out in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which stipulates that the exploration and use of outer space is carried out exclusively for peaceful purposes.
Gatilov noted that Russia is forced to take measures to restore strategic balance, one of which is moving deterrent systems like Burevestnik into the final stages of development. The diplomat added that China will also be forced to defend its national interests.
On January 20, US President Donald Trump declared Greenland critical to the US deployment of the Golden Dome missile defense system. The Golden Dome project is an American initiative to develop a multi-layered missile defense system designed to protect the continental US.

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced its readiness to take countermeasures in connection with the expiration of the New START Treaty.
Following the expiration of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), Russia is prepared to take decisive countermeasures to mitigate threats to national security, according to a statement from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"From a practical standpoint, our country views this development as a given, requiring consideration when determining Russia's future policy in this area," the diplomatic agency said in a statement.
The department noted that Russia adheres to the view that the obligations and symmetrical statements within the framework of the New START Treaty will be terminated.
Earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that US President Donald Trump would later comment on the situation with the New START treaty, which expires on February 5.
On September 22, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the complete abandonment of the New START Treaty a mistake. He proposed adhering to the treaty's terms for another year after February 5, 2026, when the agreement expires.
