| [Field Ethos] I was raised in a conservative home and developed the belief at a relatively early age that it was wrong to drink alcohol. I’m not sure whether somebody sat me down and taught me that lesson or if I just picked up the idea on my own, but my formative years were governed by the motto, "Don’t drink, smoke or chew. Or date girls that do." Consequently, I’ve been designated driving pretty much since the day I got my driver’s license. There was plenty of teenage rebellion in my life, but underage drinking wasn’t part of it. Upon my graduation from high school, I entered the ministry and I’ve been working for one church or another ever since. No matter what you believe about religion, I think we can all probably agree that it’s not a good look to show up to teach a Sunday school Bible class with a hangover. A DECLARATION OF ABSTINENCE And then, about the time I decided there would be absolutely nothing wrong with me having a mimosa with my omelet or a beer with the boys, I took a second, side job counseling drug addicts and alcoholics at an inpatient, substance abuse rehabilitation facility. Here, I listen all day long to horror stories that begin and end with alcohol abuse. For those reasons, and with the lone exception that I will one day drink a sundowner to celebrate a successful safari, I have made the personal decision to abstain from alcohol. I realize that stance doesn’t exactly jive with the Field Ethos brand, but it does set the stage for the story I want to tell here.
