The stories I happened across while looking for other things. I’m sure much more happened that I missed, but this gives the flavour or it. Note the first story about Harvard, which came out overnight. Trump seeks $1 billion from Harvard University in damages in antisemitism row[IsraelTimes] US President Donald Trump says that his administration is seeking $1 billion in damages from Harvard University. “We are now seeking One Billion Dollars in damages, and want nothing further to do, into the future, with Harvard University,” he says in a post on Truth Social, without saying what specific harms the university had caused. Trump’s administration in December appealed a judge’s ruling holding that it unlawfully terminated more than $2 billion in grants awarded to Harvard and can no longer cut off research funding to the Ivy League school. Harvard has been a central focus of the administration’s broad campaign to leverage federal funding to force change at US universities, which Trump says are gripped by antisemitic and “radical left” ideologies. Trump said last year that his administration was close to a deal with Harvard that would include a $500 million payment by the school, after months of negotiations over school policies.

Philip Leddy, the principal of the Lower Gwynedd Elementary School in Montgomery County, confirmed to the Wissahickon School District that he had made the antisemitic remarks heard on the voicemail message Friday morning after he believed he had disconnected the call, according to an email sent to the district’s parents. In the recording, Leddy made a reference to “Jew camp,” and told another staff member at the school that the parent has “Jew money” and claimed that “they control the banks,” according to the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. Later, when asked whether the parent was a lawyer, Leddy responded, “the odds are probably good.” Leddy was hired as the principal for the Lower Gwynedd Elementary School in 2023 after previously serving as committee chair of the district’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, according to a since-deleted profile for him on the school’s website. In an email to the Wissahickon School District, Superintendent Mwenyewe Dawan wrote that the district’s administrative team was recommending immediate termination of Leddy, pending an “informal private hearing on Monday morning.” Dawan wrote that Leddy had been placed on administrative leave, and that another staff member heard on the call was also placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. The Jewish parent, who requested anonymity, told Action News 6ABC that Leddy had initially called him in response to an email about an incident involving his daughter.
New York’s Cooper Union settles campus antisemitism case, pledges reforms [IsraelTimes] Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art will take steps to reduce antisemitism and other harassment on campus, in order to settle a lawsuit claiming it failed to help Jewish students who were locked inside a library as protection against pro-Palestinian demonstrators. The settlement was announced on Thursday by lawyers for 10 Jewish students who said the private Manhattan college’s fostering of a hostile educational environment violated Title VI, a section of US civil rights law that bars recipients of federal funds from allowing discrimination based on race, religion and national origin. Cooper Union will create a Title VI coordinator to oversee its handling of discrimination and harassment, train employees and students on its policies, and prohibit the wearing of masks to conceal identities at demonstrations, the lawyers said. It will also pay unspecified compensation to the 10 students. “Jewish students deserve to learn without being targeted, harassed, or excluded because of who they are or what they believe,” Ziporah Reich, director of litigation at the pro bono Lawfare Project, a pro-Israel legal group that represents the students, said in a statement. “Universities have a legal duty to protect them.” Cooper Union and its lawyer did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Documents filed in court this week shed light on how the university handled the case behind the scenes. In August 2024, Columbia administrators wrote a letter to James, saying he had violated university rules against discrimination and disruptive behavior. The letter cited incidents in April 2024 in which James posted images on social media of Jewish students and wrote, “Zionists just attempted to harass us and bring their terrorist flag over — we told [them] to get the hell out!” A day later, at Columbia’s protest encampment, when three Jewish students attempted to enter the area, James formed a “human chain” to push them out. “We have Zionists who have entered the camp,” he announced to the other protesters. The letter said James was suspended from Columbia and eligible to return in the fall of 2025.
