Republican senator forced to donate huge stock profit gains to charity after reporting them late
2026-01-30
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] An Alabama senator was forced to donate her husband's stock profits after the couple missed the deadline to report the transactions.

Republican Senator Katie Britt, 43, filed a periodic transaction report with the Senate Ethics Committee on Monday, revealing the delayed disclosures.

The report revealed that 22 stock transactions from the retirement account belonging to her husband, former NFL player Wesley Britt, were overdue, totaling between $22,000 and $330,000.

Senate reporting guidelines only require a dollar range, and the exact amounts of each transaction are unknown.

At least 16 of the transactions were more than half a year past a 45-day federal deadline, and the remaining six were several weeks past their due dates, reported NOTUS.

The transactions include an April 14 purchase of between $1,000 and $15,000 of Chase stock made in an account owned by her husband.

Britt serves on the Senate Banking Committee, and the Chase stock is up nearly 30 percent since the purchase, according to AL.com.

The Senate Ethics Committee requires periodic transaction reports to be filed within 45 days when at least $1,000 of a stock or other security is purchased, sold or exchanged.

Britt's office told AL.com she had 'no knowledge of that stock holding,' and that the stock is no longer in her husband's account.

'Upon learning of it, she requested the stock be unloaded from the account to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest,' her office said.

'At this time, Mr. Britt no longer owns that stock, and all proceeds from the transaction are being donated to charity.'
Making the problem go away, I guess.
A spokesperson for Britt also told the Daily Mail that the trade was made without Wesley's knowledge.

'These individual equity trades were in Mr. Britt’s broker-managed retirement account and made without his knowledge or consent,' the spokesperson said.

'The disclosure was filed as soon as Mr. Britt became aware of the trades this month. Additional guardrails have been implemented to prevent this from happening moving forward.'

Britt has been considered a rising star in the Republican Party since she took office in 2022 as the youngest woman ever elected to the United States Senate.
