… JAS is Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad, ie. Boko Haram. Abubakar Saidu, known as Sadiku or sometimes Mallam Sadiku, was a Fulani commander for Boko Haram, sent to the area by Abubakar Shekau himself to raise money for the group by kidnapping and cattle rustling. He originally allied with the local bandits, then fought with them, and now seems to be crossing the lines from ISIS to Al Qaeda. JNIM has also been linked to the Papiri kidnapping of Catholic children, as several of the abductees were reportedly held in a JNIM camp following the operation carried out by Sadiku’s faction.

Attacks against civilians have recently escalated in areas surrounding the Kainji Reserve, coinciding with the arrival of JAS elements in the region. These attacks have occurred within established JNIM operational zones, suggesting possible continued cooperation between the two groups even after the Papiri kidnapping incident.
