U-Haul truck drives into large crowd in Los Angeles during anti-Iranian regime rally

[CBS] At least two people were injured when the driver of a U-Haul truck allegedly drove into a large crowd of demonstrators during an anti-Iranian regime protest in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.

The rally was scheduled for 2 p.m. outside of the Wilshire Federal Building, where thousands of people gathered to show solidarity with the ongoing protests in Iran, which have resulted in more than 580 deaths in violence surrounding the demonstrations, according to U.S.-based activists.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics said that two people were treated at the scene but denied transport to the hospital.

Thank goodness.

Firefighters also said that they were working to find a third person who was also possibly injured, but they were never located.

Authorities have not yet reported any arrests in connection with the incident.

Perhaps the driver had a heart attack or stroke. Or perhaps they want to identify and collect background and connections on the driver before revealing him/her/it to the world.

By 4:30 p.m., a large amount of the demonstrators involved in the rally had already begun to leave the area. It was scheduled to end at 4 p.m., according to event organizers.

SkyCal flew over the spot where the U-Haul came to a stop, which was surrounded by a large perimeter of crime scene tape. The trailer of the truck appeared to be empty as the door was open, with Los Angeles police investigators surveying the area. The windshield of the truck appeared to be shattered, and shards of glass were seen on the street below the vehicle.

No shots fired, no knifing, no VBIED — it could have been very much worse, indeed.

The New York Post adds:

The rental truck, which had the words “NO SHAH. NO REGIME. USA: DON’T REPEAT 1953. NO MULLAH” emblazoned on one side, was swarmed by protesters as tensions quickly escalated, according to harrowing footage obtained by KABC.

The truck had both pro-Iranian regime and anti-Iranian regime phrases written on both its sides, police said.

Officers at the scene were spotted taking a man into custody after pulling him out of the truck, as angered protesters reportedly tried to punch and hit him with flag poles, the outlet reported.
