''I did not want to be one of those members who clearly stayed, outstayed his or her ability to do the job,'' Hoyer, 86, told The Washington Post in an interview published late Wednesday.

The Maryland Democrat said on social platform X he would be making an announcement on Thursday morning on the House floor, which is anticipated to be when he'll officially announce his retirement.
Hoyer is the latest House Democrat to announce he'll be forgoing reelection and his announcement is notable given his long tenure in the lower chamber and his time serving in leadership.
Hoyer, who represents Maryland's 5th Congressional District — situated between Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, running down to the southern end of the state — has served in the House since 1981. He joined Democratic leadership in 1987 when he became deputy majority whip.
The lawmaker rose to the No. 2 House Democrat in 2003, serving for roughly two decades in the role.
Hoyer is best known for his work on the Help America Vote Act, election reform legislation passed after the hotly contested 2000 White House election, and the Americans with Disabilities Act, which banned discrimination against people with disabilities.
