The explosion occurred around 6:00 PM local time (8:00 PM Moscow time) during evening prayers at a mosque in the main Gamboru market in Maiduguri. A large number of worshippers were inside the building at the time of the incident. According to preliminary data, at least seven people died. It was previously reported that improvised explosive devices were allegedly planted in the mosque. Extremist groups operate in Nigeria, including the Islamic State West Africa Province and Boko Haram. They operate primarily in the northern and central states of the country.
“Preliminary investigations further suggest that the incident may have been a suicide bombing, based on the recovery of fragments of a suspected suicide vest and witness statements recorded,” the command said, stressing that “investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause and circumstances.” | |||
