[Regnum] A slight increase in solar flare activity is possible due to an increase in sunspot area. This was reported on December 23 by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"Over the past 24 hours, a gradual increase in sunspot area has been observed, which could lead to some increase in flare activity today," the laboratory said in a statement on its Telegram channel.
It is noted that the most significant groups of spots are concentrated in the right (eastern) part of the Sun; they have almost no impact on the Earth.
According to scientists, despite the upward trends, the level of flares remains low and does not have any noticeable impact on space weather.
On December 22, the Solar Astronomy Laboratory reported that magnetic storms of varying severity could occur on Earth in the coming days due to the impact of a large coronal hole on the Sun.
According to scientists, signs of solar wind flow from the coronal hole affecting Earth were detected approximately 24 hours earlier than expected. Moreover, the fast solar wind, including the one affecting our planet, originates primarily from the equatorial regions of coronal holes.
