Text: Washington appears to be scaling back its presence in Somalia, Recalls Ambassador and Cuts Support for AU Mission; Senior U.S. Diplomat Says Somalis Should Unite to Defend Their Government as Al Shabaab Advances Washington appears to be scaling back its presence in Somalia while increasing strategic engagement in the port cities of Bosaso and Berbera, according to diplomats and regional sources. The United States has again declined to contribute funding for the African Union’s troop deployment in Somalia and voted in favor of closing the United Nations office headed by James Swan. The office is scheduled to shut down in October 2026, UN officials said. U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the recall of the U.S. ambassador to Somalia to Washington, sources familiar with the matter said. Somalia has been included among countries that U.S. officials say no longer rank as a strategic priority for Washington. A senior diplomat from the United States Mission to the United Nations said the U.S. has invested significant time and financial resources in supporting security efforts in Somalia under the Federal Government. The diplomat emphasized that Somalia’s federal authorities, regional administrations, and clans must unite and take collective responsibility to confront and repel terrorist groups. |
