[Regnum] The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Taxation, and Customs Policy recommended adopting a bill renaming the kopeck to a "step." Committee Chairman Danylo Getmantsev announced this on December 15 on his Telegram channel.
The document is recommended for adoption in both the first and second, final readings.
In April, the head of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Andriy Pyshnyy, announced the need to " derussify" the kopecks. In October, the bill was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada. The NBU noted that the "shag" was used as a small change in what is now Ukraine in the 17th century, as well as during the Civil War. Pyshnyy noted that if the law is passed, there are no plans to remove all kopecks from circulation; they will continue to be used alongside the "shag" for a time.
In November, Lviv journalist Ilko Lemko called for the de-Russification of the cat's "meow, " noting that Ukrainian cats "yapped" rather than "meowed." The reason for this was an advertisement for pet products, which he accused of "Russification." The statement provoked a sarcastic response from Verkhovna Rada deputy Maksym Buzhansky, who jokingly proposed creating "cat-language commissioners" and assessing the trustworthiness of owners based on their pets' behavior.
