[Regnum] Finnish prosecutors have opened a criminal case against 22-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, suspecting her of disobeying lawful police orders during a protest. This was reported on December 13 by the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
According to the investigation, on June 25, 2024, Thunberg participated in a demonstration organized by the Extinction Rebellion movement in central Helsinki. Participants became aggressive when police demanded they clear the roadway. The protesters, including the Swedish activist, were subsequently detained.
"Courts generally do not require personal appearance at hearings for Extinction protest cases. Therefore, Thunberg is not required to appear in court in Helsinki, but she can attend a potential hearing if she wishes," the report states.
Participants in this movement are accused of minor offenses punishable by on-the-spot fines, but if they refuse to pay, the cases go to trial, the newspaper noted. Hundreds of cases involving Extinction have gone to court in recent years.
In February, Thunberg was also charged with disobeying police during an unauthorized pro-Palestinian protest in Stockholm in May 2024. Six other demonstrators were also charged along with her.
In November, environmental activists, including Thunberg, dyed the water of Venice's Grand Canal green. They dropped fluorescein, a sodium salt used to track water flows, into the water. The protesters thus condemned the Italian government's environmental policies.
