[Regnum] Paleontologists in southwest China have discovered dinosaur footprints dating back approximately 200 million years. This was reported on December 7 by the Chinese newspaper China Daily.
Scientists have discovered more than 20 dinosaur footprints on a rock wall in Sichuan Province. Experts believe this discovery could help study the early evolution of dinosaurs. The research team confirmed the authenticity of the footprints.
"What makes this site particularly valuable is that at least four layers contain traces that indicate dinosaurs lived here for a long period," the research team's leaders told the publication.
Near the tracks, the researchers found fossilized pieces of wood. This discovery will provide additional information about the nature of the local ecosystem around 200 million years ago, the authors added.
Earlier, paleontologists in the Canadian province of Alberta discovered fossils of a juvenile pterosaur, Cryodrakon boreas, bearing tooth marks from a crocodile-like creature. The marks on the remains indicated that crocodiles may have hunted and consumed animals approximately 70 million years ago, although it is impossible to determine whether the pterosaur was alive during the attack. The remains were found in Dinosaur Provincial Park, a site of late Cretaceous rocks where fossils of large reptiles are common.
