The earthquake's magnitude was initially estimated at 6.8, but the USGS later updated its parameters. According to updated data, the epicenter was located 90 km north of Yakutat, and the depth was 10 km.
There were no reports of casualties or damage.
On October 13, scientists warned that the United States could face a major earthquake triggered by a tectonic fault running along the coast of three states: California, Oregon, and Washington. Experts noted that, despite the well-known, terrifying threat of a megaquake along the San Andreas Fault in California, the Cascadia Subduction Zone is causing geologists even greater concern.
