Russian domestic film: Aita
2025-12-06
[IMDB] This was an incredibly difficult film to find, but the search ultimately led me to Amazon Prime.

I tried to find an comparative analog in American firms about lynching, but the lists I saw fell well short of the theme in this film.

The film is set in an unnamed riverine village in Sakha Republic, the largest republic in area in far eastern Russia. The village police are alerted to a suicide attempt by a young Yakut
…a Turkic ethnic group native to North Siberia…
schoolgirl, who eventually succumbs to her injuries. Police find a reference to someone involved with the girl, who also has the same given name as one of the white Russian police officers.

The villagers, already enraged about the presumed suspect, are sent over the edge when it is learned she was eight weeks pregnant.

The basic theme is so well done, it is unlike other Russian films, and not just because it has to do with the Yakuts in Sakha Republic. From the tragicomic reaction of the villagers to its eventual resolution, it is a film well worth seeing.
