[Regnum] Iraqi authorities have offered the United States the opportunity to develop the country's largest oil field, replacing Lukoil. The Iraqi Oil Ministry announced this on December 1.
The subject is the West Qurna-2 oil field. Iraqi authorities believe that transferring management of the field to an American company will safeguard mutual interests, as well as contribute to the stability of global markets, maintaining market share, and preserving national revenues. This will ensure the continuity of Iraqi oil production, the agency noted on its Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company designated as extremist and banned in Russia).
The ministry emphasized that the right to develop the deposit will be awarded to the company that wins the negotiations. The identities of the parties involved are not being disclosed.
On October 22, Washington imposed sanctions against Russian oil companies Lukoil, Rosneft, and their subsidiaries. On November 21, US President Donald Trump promised to impose new "very powerful" sanctions against Russia, which would affect Russian oil sales, and emphasized that he had no intention of lifting sanctions on Russian oil companies.
