[Regnum] Flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Ditwa has killed 123 people in Sri Lanka, the Daily Mirror reported on November 29, citing the National Disaster Management Center.
In addition, 130 people are listed as missing.
In Kandy district, 51 people were killed and 67 were missing. In Badulla district, 35 people were killed and 27 remain missing. Nine people were killed in Galle, eight in Matale, and six more bodies were found in Nuwara Eliya and five in Ampara.
The cyclone in Sri Lanka affected 373,428 people, with more than 43,000 people evacuated to 488 temporary accommodation centres.
On the evening of November 28, the Kelani River, which flows into the Indian Ocean in Colombo, overflowed its banks due to a cyclone. Hundreds of people hurriedly sought temporary shelters. Today, flooding has intensified in low-lying areas.
The current flooding has surpassed the 2016 record, when 101 people died in Sri Lanka. Most of the casualties were recorded in central Sri Lanka, where two massive landslides occurred.
