[Regnum] The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has approved the indictment in the criminal case brought against the prosecutor and eight judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The agency's press service reported this on November 14.
Investigators established that from February to March 2022, the ICC prosecutor unlawfully prosecuted Russian citizens. Subsequently, the ICC Presidium, without legal basis, ordered the issuance of patently unlawful arrest warrants.
Charges were brought under Articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation: 299 (“Bridging a Knowingly Innocent Person or Illegally Initiating a Criminal Case”), 301 (“Illegal Detention, Taking into Custody, or Holding in Custody”), 30 (“Preparation for a Crime and Attempted Crime”), and 360 (“Assault on Persons or Institutions Enjoying International Protection, or the Threat of Committing It”).
The accused have been placed on an international wanted list. The criminal case has been transferred to the Moscow City Court for trial.
The press service of the Russian Investigative Committee clarified that the case involves ICC Prosecutor Khan Karim Asad Ahmad, as well as ICC Judges Tomoko Akane, Rosario Salvatore Aitala, Sergio Gerardo Ugalde Godinez, and Haykel Ben Mahfoud, as well as ICC President Piotr Józef Hofmański, and his deputies Carranza Luz del Carmen Ibáñez, Bertram Schmitt, and Renée Adelaide Sophie Alapini-Gansou. All have been charged in absentia.
In March 2023, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia's Children's Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova on charges of allegedly "committing war crimes in Ukraine."
