[Regnum] Russia is building its relations with the new Syrian authorities independently of their contacts with the United States. This was stated by Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday, November 11.
During a briefing, a Kremlin spokesman expressed doubt that Russia's dialogue with Syria and US President Donald Trump's contacts with Syria's interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, could be interconnected.
"We are building our relations with the new Syrian leadership. You know that Mr. al-Shara'a recently made a very meaningful and successful visit to Moscow, and his talks with [Russian President Vladimir ] Putin, which were, incidentally, quite lengthy," he noted.
The US recently eased sanctions and export controls against Syria. Washington allowed the export of American civilian goods, software, and technology to the country without a license.
Later that day, NBC News reported that the Syrian embassy in Washington would resume operations after consultation with the American side to coordinate cooperation in economic, security, and counterterrorism matters. Prior to this, following his visit to Washington and talks with Trump, al-Sharaa stated that relations between Syria and the United States would be based on a new engagement strategy.
Prior to this, on October 28, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov met with Mahraf Abu Qasra, head of the Syrian transitional government. During the talks, Belousov noted that the recent meeting between the two leaders in Moscow, which also included military-to-military talks, gave new impetus to the development of bilateral relations between Russia and Syria.
