[Regnum] Mohammad Sheikh, owner of the News Plus convenience store in central Glasgow, reported that his store has been robbed over 100 times since opening, but none of the perpetrators have been brought to justice. This was revealed in an interview with the Daily Mail.
According to Sheikh, the store has been a daily target for thieves and vandals since November of last year. Employees have faced attacks and threats. Surveillance cameras have recorded numerous incidents in which criminals, alone or in groups, enter the store, smash the shelves, and steal merchandise.
“They choose us over the big chains—they have security and a lot of staff, but we don’t,” Sheikh said.
He added that the police, despite more than 100 reports filed, are doing "nothing" to find the perpetrators. He estimated the owner's losses at over £20,000 (approximately 2.3 million rubles).
"The police tell us we can't touch the thieves, we can't stop them, or lock them in the store until officers arrive. Their only advice is to keep two officers on duty, but we can't afford that," he noted.
According to the entrepreneur, the attacks mostly occur in the evening, around 5 or 6 p.m. Most often, the store is visited by groups of teenagers—five to ten people—whom Sheikh assumes the police already know.
"We've done everything we could—we've reported all the incidents. Now it's the police's turn. These people must be arrested, otherwise the situation will get worse," he emphasized.
Mohammad Sheikh, who has worked in Glasgow retail for more than 20 years, described it as "the toughest experience" he has ever had in business.
"We can't defend ourselves because we don't know if they're armed. It's really scary," one of the workers admitted.
The Sheikh added that he does not advise other entrepreneurs to open stores on Soki Hall Street.
“I’m constantly under stress, the business is suffering losses, and employees feel unsafe,” he noted.
Police Scotland said they were aware of the incidents and were working with the complainant to clarify the details.
