[Regnum] Solar activity on November 7 could trigger unusually strong magnetic storms on Earth. This was reported by the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"Today is expected to be one of the most challenging, and most likely the most challenging, geomagnetic day of the year. Earth is expected to enter the zone of a large coronal hole and withstand the arrival of two plasma clouds ejected by powerful solar flares," the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement.
Scientists clarified that the solar wind speed is currently reaching 700–800 km/s, compared to the normal 300–400 km/s, and the temperature of the near-Earth plasma has increased approximately 5–10 times, to half a million degrees. The magnetospheric response is currently moderate, but storms could intensify to G3 levels in the coming hours.
According to IKI RAS forecasts, the densest parts of solar ejections will likely pass by Earth, and the storms will not exceed the G4 threshold. If a frontal impact hits the planet, they could reach the maximum G5 level.
The day before, the Solar Astronomy Laboratory reported that Earth was already engulfed in planetary-scale magnetic storms caused by solar flares. According to scientists, the Kp index reached G2–G3 levels, corresponding to storms of moderate to strong intensity. Experts predicted that magnetospheric disturbances would last for about a day and enter a more powerful phase on November 7, when the planets would reach the bulk of the ejected solar plasma.
