This is roughly how we got here: The communist Tigray People’s Liberation Front controlled Ethiopia’s government from 1989 to 2019, having overthrown the evil Mengistu, when they made the mistake of putting one of their own ministers, Abiy Ahmed — who is not Tigrayan — in as prime minister. Somehow he had become convinced of the benefits of democracy and capitalism, perhaps informed by the MBA he picked up along the way, and within a year was elected president, won a Nobel Peace Prize for ending the war with Eritrea, freed the economy, pursued the corrupt, and sent the TPLF into retirement at their family hearths in Tigray. Naturally this could not be allowed to stand, so the generals of the renamed TDF revolted, committing numerous of the usual war crimes along the way. But their sweep to the capitol was stopped and reversed, and they were driven back to their province, where fighting continues to this day.
