In New York, Mamdani, who was a little-known lawmaker in the state legislature before his surprising rise, has led by double digits over Cuomo, with Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, 71, a distant third in most opinion polls.
His win signals a generational change and a dramatic pivot toward more left-leaning city governance.
Mamdani has proposed more ambitious left-wing policies, including freezing rents for nearly a million apartments and making the city's buses free.
For Republicans, Tuesday's elections test whether the voters who powered Trump's victory in 2024 will still show up when he is not on the ballot.
Analysts say this result could reverberate across US politics, particularly within the Democratic Party, which faces renewed internal divides.
Mamdani has pledged to immediately tackle issues of affordability, public transit, housing and social justice — promising to be a mayor for working-class New Yorkers. He will take office in January and begin implementing his agenda.

In first, suburb of Boston votes to divest from Israel
[IsraelTimes] A municipal ballot proposal to divest from Israel went before a popular vote in the United States for the first time yesterday — and pulls off a decisive victory.
Question 3 wins more than 55% of the vote in unofficial election results in the Boston suburb of Somerville, Massachusetts.
Local pro-Palestinian activists claim victory, with Somerville for Palestine — the group that gathered the signatures required to put the non-binding resolution on the ballot — posting a celebratory Instagram video alongside the Boston chapter of anti-Zionist group Jewish Voice for Peace.
However, as they are celebrating, the mayoral candidate best poised to enact the proposal in Somerville concedes his race to a rival who signaled he was far less likely to do so. Willie Burnley Jr., a democratic socialist who had endorsed Question 3, lost to fellow at-large city council member Jake Wilson, who did not.
