[Regnum] The United States would like to sign a treaty with Russia on the control of tactical nuclear weapons. This was announced on November 4 by Robert Kadlec, nominated by US President Donald Trump to be Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear Deterrence, Chemical and Biological Defense Policy, and Programs.
Kadlec asserted that Russia has deployed a large, multi-weapon arsenal of nuclear forces that threatens both US forces and Washington's allies.
"We should explore ways to ensure that these weapons are covered by a verifiable arms control treaty with Russia," Kadlec said in response to questions from U.S. lawmakers at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing to consider his nomination.
In September, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the complete abandonment of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) a mistake. He proposed adhering to the treaty's terms for another year after February 5, 2026, when the agreement expires.
