[Regnum] A weak G1 magnetic storm began on Earth on October 30. This was reported by the press service of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
This is the fourth and, according to experts, the last magnetic storm in October. Scientists began expecting an increase in geomagnetic disturbances after Earth entered the zone of a coronal hole.
"Most of the storms that occurred earlier this month were also associated with coronal holes, except for the very first, three-day storm, which was recorded against the backdrop of a strong increase in flare activity in late September and early October," the laboratory noted.
The storm was expected to be moderate, and so far this forecast is coming true.
“The storm was registered at a low G1 level with the potential to grow to no more than G2 (there are five gradations on the scale),” the scientists noted.
Despite the moderate nature of the magnetic storm, its activity was sufficient to expand the auroral zone: within an hour, it descended to the latitudes of Moscow. The northern lights were not visible in the capital due to daylight. However, the laboratory reported that the polar oval remains likely to remain intense until nightfall.
Previously, magnetic storms were observed during the first three days of October, as well as on October 12 and 18-19. Scientists noted that the number of magnetic storms has been high for the second month in a row. Five storms were recorded in September, while there was a decline at the end of summer.
