BACKGROUND
Accurate Energetic Systems is a company established in 1980 that manufactures and researches explosives including demolition charges and high explosives.[1] Their customers include aerospace, oil, and commercial demolition companies.[2] The company had contract with the Department of Defense for the manufacture of explosives.[3][4] They employed approximately 75 people prior to the explosion.[5] The facility is located near the border between Hickman County and Humphreys County in Tennessee.[3] The plant takes up 1,300 acres (530 ha) of land near Bucksnort. Across the eight buildings of the facility, explosives are manufactured, stored, researched, and tested.[2] The explosives manufactured included C-4 and TNT.[5] In 2014, an explosion at another Accurate Energetic Systems manufacturing plant in McEwen killed one person and injured three others while about 20 employees were inside the building as the facility sustained considerable damage.[6] The mayor of Hickman County reported that the facility had had no safety issues apart from the 2014 explosion.[7]
