Thomas Jacob Sanford rammed his Chevy Silverado truck into the building before opening fire on worshipers at a Sunday service of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan. The vehicle had two large American flags behind the cab and a set of deer antlers attached to the bumper. He also set the church ablaze, causing the entire structure to burn down. Authorities fear there may be more victims in the fire. A Facebook post by Sanford’s mother says the gunman — who died at the scene in a shootout with cops — served in Iraq from 2004 to 2008. He was killed minutes after the first 911 call came in. A Department of Natural Resources officer and a local township cop responded to the scene in about 30 seconds, authorities said. Authorities later confirmed that Sanford, from nearby Burton, Michigan, is the lone suspect. The source of the blaze was not immediately known, but sources told The Post that authorities found improvised bombs on church property, which a bomb squad was investigating. A bomb squad was also searching Sanford’s house. Cops said there were hundreds of worshippers inside the church when the attack began, with aerial footage showing an enormous plume of choking black smoke rising up from the structure as it burned. Social media accounts believed to be connected to Sanford show he’s a family man, with a wife and young son. A dormant GoFundMe page from 2015 raised more than $3,000 for the couple’s now-10-year-old son who was born with congenital hyperinsulinism, or CHI, a rare, genetic condition where the pancreas releases too much insulin.
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye reports that two additional victims were found inside the remains of the church. Officials were unable to search the church immediately following the shooting due to the fire, and are still searching for other victims.

One of the maimed​ victims is still "clinging to life," officials told news hounds Sunday, ​adding that many who were at the restaurant last night were from out of state. Edge, 39, was armed with a short-barreled AR rifle, equipped with a suppressor, with a folding stock and scope, court documents charge. ​The suspect, described as a "lone wolf’’ by authorities, faces three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The wild claims in the lawsuits echo those detailed in a book written by ​Edge when he went by Sean DeBevoise, "Headshot: Betrayal of a Nation," where he claims that he was shot four times, including in the head, by friendly fire over an international conspiracy. He claims he served in the Marine Corps and was deployed to Haiti and then served two tours in Iraq, when he found himself in the middle of the conspiracy ring. The ​Marine said he was maimed in two separate IED attacks during a 2006 tour in Iraq, along with a bullet wound that left shrapnel lodged in his head. A US military spokesperson confirmed that Edge served in the Marines from 2003 to 2009 and deployed to Iraq in 2005 and again in 2006. He received a number of prestigious awards during his service, including a Purple Heart. He was also awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct medal, Combat Action ribbon, Sea Service Deployment ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, Humanitarian Service medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service medal, and National Defense Service medal. North Carolina authorities also identified Edge as a combat veteran allegedly suffering from PTSD. He was previously seen on the red carpet accompanying "American Idol" star Kellie Pickler to the Country Music Awards in 2012. Following the mass shooting, police said the gunman quickly took off on the Intracoastal Waterway and was spotted at around 10 p.m. trying to load a vessel along the marina on Oak Island. He was arrested by the US Coast Guard​. Edge was being held at the Brunswick County Detention Center without bond, according to court records.
