"In a solemn ceremony, in the presence of judges and staff of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, in accordance with the law 'On the Status of Judges in the Russian Federation,' Igor Viktorovich Krasnov took the oath," according to a statement published on the court's website.
On September 24, the Federation Council (FC) appointed Krasnov as Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation at a plenary session. The FC Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building confirmed that his candidacy meets the requirements of the constitution and the law on the status of judges. Krasnov was appointed to the position for a six-year term.
Irina Podnosova served as the Chairperson of the Supreme Court of Russia from April 2024. She died on July 22, 2025.
In August, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation submitted an application for the vacancy of the head of the Supreme Court to the High Qualification Collegium of Judges of the Russian Federation. The judicial body approved his candidacy on September 15. The Commission for Preliminary Review of Judicial Appointments and Terminations under the President of Russia also supported the appointment on September 17.
On September 18, Andrei Klishas, ​​Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building, announced that the Federation Council had received a recommendation from Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding Krasnov's appointment as Chairman of the Supreme Court.
Krasnov has served as Prosecutor General since 2020. In August 2022, the Russian leader awarded him the title of Honored Lawyer of the Russian Federation. On September 23, Krasnov stated that he considers his nomination as Chairman of the Supreme Court a sign of the highest trust and a tremendous responsibility to society and the people.
