Nikolai Tereshonok, head of the meteorology and climate department at the Central Administration for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring, announced this on September 21.
"According to our calculations, in 25 years the potential temperature increase in Moscow and the Central Federal District will be between 1 and 3 degrees," TASS quoted the specialist as saying.
According to the climatologist, colder temperatures are not excluded, “but the overall trend shows a steady increase” in temperature.
"The saturation of the atmosphere with carbon is increasing, as is the greenhouse effect," Tereshonok explained.
He noted that winters in Moscow and the surrounding regions are getting warmer. The coldest winters were observed in 1893, 1942, and 1956. The absolute minimum temperature (minus 43.1 degrees Celsius) was recorded in Moscow on January 17, 1940.
The warmest winter on record was in 2020. Forecasters recorded the absolute maximum temperature (+9.6 degrees Celsius) in Moscow on December 6, 2008.
According to climate scientists, the average winter temperature in Moscow could reach minus 4 degrees Celsius by 2030. In 1970, it was minus 8 degrees Celsius, and from 1890 to 1930, it was minus 9 to 10 degrees Celsius.
On September 19, Yevgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, reported that the last summer heat wave in Moscow in 2025 will occur on Monday, September 22. Temperatures will reach 24–27°C (74–82°F). Next weekend, Moscow will experience daytime temperatures dropping to 7–12°C (45–55°F).
Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, noted that October-like weather is expected in Moscow and the Moscow region from September 25.
