[Regnum]. Seismologists recorded 30 aftershocks in Kamchatka following a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake, 18 of which occurred within two hours. This follows from data from the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences on Friday, September 19.
According to scientists, the magnitude of the tremors recorded between 12:33 AM and 2:27 AM Moscow time ranged from 4.2 to 5.8, and all were observed in the Pacific Ocean. Their epicenters were located at depths ranging from 10.4 to 52.9 km.
On the morning of September 19, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The epicenter was located at a depth of 39 km, 128 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Following a powerful earthquake off the coast of the peninsula, a tsunami threat arose within 1,000 kilometers of its epicenter. Waves were predicted to reach heights of one to three meters above high tide along several areas of the Russian coast.
On the night of September 19, the Kamchatka Krai government reported that no damage had been reported as a result of the earthquake. At the direction of Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov, an overnight shelter was opened for residents afraid to remain in their homes following a series of strong aftershocks.
