A gunman shot Kirk in the neck while he was speaking at the University of Utah. At the time, the activist was speaking about gun violence in the United States. The politician was hospitalized, but his life could not be saved.
Later, on September 16, Utah State Attorney Jeff Gray indicted Tyler Robinson, the suspect in Kirk's murder. He clarified his intention to seek the death penalty and added that the suspect would be held in the Utah State Prison without bail. Then, on September 18, the suspect voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement, fearing he would be shot.
