A military court in Rostov-on-Don has sentenced Muscovite Dzhokhar Khadzhiev, who, according to security officials, attempted to join ISIS* militants in Syria in 2024.Â
The Southern District Military Court heard the case of 30-year-old Dzhokhar Khadzhiev in a single hearing. The Moscow resident was charged with preparation for participation in the activities of a terrorist organization (Part 1 of Article 30, Part 2 of Article 205.5 of the Russian Criminal Code).Â
According to the prosecution, in July 2024, Khadzhiev decided to join ISIS*, which is designated a terrorist organization by the Supreme Court of Russia. The case file alleges that Khadzhiev professed "ideas of radical Sunni Islam" and was motivated by "religious hostility toward other religions."Â
According to security officials, Khadzhiev contacted a representative of a terrorist organization and received instructions to travel to Syria via Turkey. "Upon arrival in Turkey, he is to be transported across the border and escorted to the terrorists' location," the court's official Telegram channel reported.Â
Khadzhiev purchased his own plane tickets but was unable to leave the country. FSB officers detained him at the Sochi airport. The court found the Moscow resident guilty and sentenced him to five years and six months in prison. Khadzhiev is to serve the first two and a half years of his sentence in prison, and the remainder in a maximum-security penal colony.Â
Dzhokhar Khadzhiev's sentence was handed down today, at the first and only hearing in the case. The case was filed for trial on September 1, according to the records of the Southern District Military Court. As of 7:10 p.m. Moscow time, Dzhokhar Khadzhiev's name is not on Rosfinmonitoring's list of terrorists and extremists. Caucasian Knot has not yet received any comment from Khadzhiev or his lawyer regarding the sentence or the prosecution's case.
The "Caucasian Knot" also reported that a 20-year-old native of Chechnya was arrested in Germany in February. According to German law enforcement, he intended to attack the Israeli embassy in Berlin and planned to join ISIS.
