[Regnum] The Earth, as expected, was affected by a coronal hole on the Sun, but this happened a day later. This was reported on September 14 by the press service of the solar astronomy laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS).
"Judging by the instrument readings, the planet... with a delay of a day, nevertheless began to cross the boundary of the coronal hole. In fact, there was no doubt that this would happen... The main question was what are the parameters of the plasma inside the hole and, most importantly, what is the wind speed there," the scientists clarified in the Telegram channel.
Overall, the laboratory's forecasts look moderately positive. With such a hole size, long-term storms of at least level 3 were expected, while models currently show episodic disturbances of level 1–2. Scientists are monitoring the graphs.
On the night of September 10, a sudden magnetic storm of medium strength occurred on Earth, which was not predicted in forecasts and arose without external influences from the Sun. It was assumed that the cause of the phenomenon was a large substorm - a spontaneous imbalance in the tail of the magnetosphere, which released the energy of the planet, which was confirmed by the observed polar lights.
On September 11, the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that new magnetic storms could hit the Earth in the near future. According to the data, a significant change in the geomagnetic situation, including magnetic storms of the 2nd and 3rd levels on a five-point scale, is expected on September 13–14 due to the appearance of a large equatorial coronal hole on the visible side of the Sun.
