[Regnum] New magnetic storms may hit Earth in the near future. This was reported on September 11 by the press service of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS).
“A fairly significant change in the geomagnetic environment, including the formation of new magnetic storms of the second and third levels on a five-point scale, is tentatively expected this weekend, starting on September 13–14, due to the appearance on the visible side of the Sun of an unusually large equatorial coronal hole located in the plane of rotation of the planets,” says a message published on the Telegram channel of the IKI RAS.
It is noted that September demonstrates unusually high geomagnetic activity. According to their data, three planetary-scale magnetic storms have already been registered in the first 10 days of the month - on September 2, 6 and 10.
On September 10, the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the IKI RAS reported that on the night of September 10, a sudden magnetic storm of medium strength occurred on Earth, which was not predicted in forecasts and arose without external influences from the Sun. Scientists suggested that the cause of the phenomenon was a large substorm - a spontaneous imbalance in the tail of the magnetosphere, which released the planet's energy, which was confirmed by the observed polar lights.
