New rantburg.com server -- UPDATE |
2025-08-11 |
by Chris Covert Rantburg Backend mechanic We are proceeding much faster than anticipated in moving to our new permanent home. This post outlines what has happened to the changeover and what to expect. There have been changes. 1) The new rantburg.com will reside on a single quadcore Xeon CPU and RAID electronics, instead of the previously specified dual quadcore processor. The new server still has 32 gigs of RAM. In the early going with the hosting provider, I had a devil of a time getting their RAID rig to work. My previous experience in setting up FreeBSD on a RAID rig in the past have been singularly negative. After three complete self-installations which failed, and me begging the hardware guys to move to a bare metal server, the hardware people decided to let me have what I needed. Don't get me wrong. I love those guys. They are polite, knowledgeable, with years of professional experience behind them -- everything I'm not. So, rantburg.com will be on a one terabyte SD drive bare metal server, instead of the virtual rig. This will make rantburg.com much more stable. 2) Thinking seriously about moving the changeover up by one, possibly two weeks. Setting up the new server was at times hard, moving from php 8.0 to php 8.3, and overhauling the apache php interpreter to an entirely new interpreter but it appears it is ready. When I do decide it is time, I will post a post with the title "The changeover is tonight." At midnight, the database is backed up for the final time, and moved to the new server. Any activity on ranturg.com after that time will be gone forever. At the same time, there will be an inevitable delay as the rantburg.com name is propagated throughout the domain name system. rantburg.com will be for some unavailable for a brief period of time. But newrantburg.1dogstar.net is now and always will be available. #13 Unfortunately, as soon as techs make something idiot proof, Nature invents better idiots. |

#12 in the end our users/customers/regular needn't do anything Nothing is well within my skill set. Beyond that, I make no promises. But if you can continue to keep it idiot proof, that would be a good idea. |

#11 When the changeover begins on Friday at noon, you will be redirected to the new server under its current name as the rantburg.com name propagates throughout the DNS system. Once the name is propagated, rantburg.com will continue under the rantburg.com as well as the newrantburg.1dogstar.net name. There likely will be short outage at the new server as the database is transferred. I will make a reminder post Friday morning, but in the end our users/customers/regular needn't do anything. It all will be handled at the server level. |

#9 For the Luddite-Clueless faithful here at Rantburg, do I still just click on my favorites linky tab in Windows 7 using Chrome? |

#6 #5 Client upgraded their system (without telling us, of course) and our monitoring network didn't play well with their new configurations (lots of drama directed at us for something they did, not unusual). Initially opting for the RAID dual/quad core package was 100 percent my fault. I should have known better, but at that moment I didn't. Last time I tried to install on a RAID rig was FreeBSD 9X, so I figure, FreddBSD 14 was an improvement, to the point where I could just jump in as I always had. It wasn't until after my third self install I began to beg them for the single processor machine. |

#3 The last time I upgraded an Apache PHP version was from 3 to 5 (or something around there). Not fun at all, so good luck. |
