Iranian daily Haft Sobh found out that Akbari was officially married 19 times. In addition, she had extramarital affairs with 18 men.
She chose older, wealthy men who were attracted to her outward caring nature. But the marriage always ended in the man's death.
According to the Asr-e Iran newspaper, Akbari slipped drugs to her husbands that gradually led to their death. She added poison to diabetes medication, drinks or food, gradually increasing the dosage. When another victim became ill, she went with him to the hospital. The man was saved, doctors considered him ill. When he returned home, the wife increased the dose of poison, the man died, and his death was already perceived as natural.
For a long time, the woman remained above suspicion. However, the mysterious circumstances of her 82-year-old husband's death two years ago prompted his sons to file a formal complaint with the authorities, which launched a comprehensive investigation into the case.
During the trial, the families of the four victims demanded retribution. The defendant tried to evade the charges. After the court showed a video recording of Akbari reenacting the crime, she admitted the veracity of her previous confessions.
The lawyer asked the court to conduct a psychological examination. The prosecution did not agree. The prosecutor insists that Akbari carefully prepared the crimes: they were committed using skillfully selected drugs. This indicates deliberate criminal behavior, and not mental illness, the prosecutors believe.
According to Haft Sobh, the number of victims could reach 45, including heirs and blood relatives of the victims. Akbari's case has been transferred to the Second Criminal Court of Iran.
