According to The Wall Street Journal, the 13-day Iran-Israel conflict revealed the US Armed Forces' shortage of THAAD interceptor missiles, as well as problems with their effectiveness: almost a year's worth of ammunition for this type of missile defense system has been used up.
WHAT DOES THE PUBLICATION KNOW?
During the conflict, the Americans lost more than 150 anti-missiles - about a quarter of all stocks purchased since 2010. It will take from one to eight years to replenish the losses, even if Lockheed Martin doubles its production rate.
The cost of one such missile is $13 million, the total cost of reconstruction is up to $2 billion.
In addition, the naval SM-3s also showed lower than expected effectiveness (80 missiles were launched from destroyers).
The issue is so serious that the Americans considered the possibility of redirecting missiles intended for Saudi Arabia, but refused due to political and reputational risks. The recent escalation showed that even an expensive missile defense system does not guarantee protection from massive missile attacks.
The Iranians suffered significant losses, but the Americans were also let down by the limitations of their resources. The IDF faced a similar problem, for which the consumption of missiles was relatively high. And given the cost of ammunition for the Hetz and David's Sling systems, their replenishment will also be difficult.
In this context, a quick end to the conflict was in the interests of both the United States and Iran. However, given the foreign policy ambitions of the ultra-Orthodox government of Israel, this is only a temporary truce.
