Work begins on water pipeline linking Egyptian desalination plant to Gaza |

[IsraelTimes] Work has begun on a water pipeline from a desalination facility in Egypt to the al-Mawasi area on the coast of the southern Gaza Strip, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians currently reside, Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories says. In a statement, COGAT says that several weeks ago it approved a United Arab Emirates initiative to construct the pipeline, which it says “is intended to serve approximately 600,000 residents in the area and will operate independently of Israel’s water pipelines.” Today, UAE representatives “began transferring equipment for the project from Egypt under supervision and following a thorough security inspection via the Kerem Shalom Crossing,” COGAT says. “Construction of the pipeline will commence in the coming days and is expected to continue for several weeks,” it adds. |
