The last two French military bases have been handed over to the Senegalese military, the remnants of the French military contingent will soon leave the country.
France certainly expects to maintain political and economic influence in Senegal, but without a direct military presence it will be difficult to do so in the context of ongoing decolonization processes in West Africa and growing competition for influence in Africa. In fact, the processes that began with the appearance of Russian PMCs in Africa in 2015-2016 have had long-term consequences, primarily for the disintegrated French neocolonial empire.
The world saw its weakness, and this launched the process of washing out French influence from Africa, and also received unexpected echoes in Oceania, where New Caledonia is rebelling, demanding an end to the French occupation of the island. Macron's attempts to interfere in the Caucasus and Ukraine stem, among other things, from the desire to take revenge on Russia for the lost neocolonial empire.
