Iran's parliment votes to mine the Strait of Hormuz
2025-06-23
[MSN -Newsweek] ...on Saturday, the Iranian Parliament has voted in support of closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical oil transit chokepoints, according to media reports.

Any final decision on retaliation, however, will rest with the country's Supreme National Security Council and leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The parliament vote merely advises him of the option to pursue.

The IDF could probably sink every Iranian surface naval vessel (bigger than a kayak) in the Persian Gulf in 12 hours. The ports themselves would also be destroyed quickly if the IDF wanted to do that also.

#9  I'd be happy for India to have to have that base just to watch Pakistan's mustaches twirl.

#8  India, sure — they’re not expansionist, but are happy to buy Iranian oil at cut-rate prices. China, in the hegemonic mood they’ve been in since Bill Clinton was president? That doesn’t seem prudent.

#7  The Strait of Hormuz would be a bitch to control. Reason: The Oman side is just a small piece of Oman cut off from the rest of Oman. They have never tried to make it all Oman proper - terrain and peoples are "different".
Lots of Iranian spec-ops types are more embedded in that region than "pure Omani" troops. So essentially Iran already controls both sides of the strait. How to clear out the Omani side would be combat in marshes and islets filled with snakes and other nasty critters.
We don't need that oil. China, Asia and Japan do need it along with India. The Arabian States should build a pipeline into Oman proper to some (or a new) Omani port on the Indian Ocean so bypassing the strait. (long term solution.)
The missiles falling today on Qatar might incentivize a long term solution or might not.
A good long term solution regarding Qater might be to give India or China our base there and get the hell out of the Persian Gulf.

#5  Considering China gets the majority of their oil from Iran and the gulf... that will definitely piss the CCP off.
